Sounds of City Road
Celebrating Diversity through Immersive Art
As digital artists, we had the incredible opportunity to contribute to the Llais festival, an annual international arts event centred around the theme of the human voice based in Wales Millennium Centre. The project, titled “Sounds of City Road,” was designed to encapsulate the spirit of Cardiff’s vibrant and diverse community, specifically focusing on City Road, a bustling and multicultural hub within Cardiff.
Concept and Vision:
The essence of “Sounds of City Road” lies in its ability to transport individuals into the heart of Cardiff’s multicultural tapestry. Using innovative technology and creativity, we aimed to create an immersive experience that would allow visitors to Wales Millennium Centre to step into the vibrant atmosphere of City Road. By projecting images of various places onto a cube using four projectors, we crafted a dynamic environment that constantly transforms, captivating viewers and giving them a sense of being in the heart of City Road.
Immersive Experience:
When visitors enter the immersive space, they are instantly enveloped in the sights and sounds of City Road. The images change every 20 seconds, inviting people to immerse themselves in different aspects of the community, such as barber shops, coffee shops, restaurants, and streets. The curated collection of images showcases the diverse and lively atmosphere of City Road, capturing its essence in a unique way.
Celebrating Diversity and Multiculturalism:
At the core of “Sounds of City Road” is the celebration of diversity and multiculturalism. By curating visual snippets of various places and projecting them onto the cube, we aimed to create a microcosm of the rich cultural tapestry that makes up City Road. Each captured image tells a story of its own, reflecting the traditions, identities, and lives of the people who inhabit these spaces.
Crafting the Soundscape:
In alignment with the festival’s theme, we didn’t limit the experience to just visuals. To enhance the immersive encounter, I recorded sounds from each of the captured locations. These sounds come together to form a unique and captivating soundscape that transports visitors even deeper into the heart of City Road. The fusion of visual and auditory elements works in harmony to create a multisensory journey for the senses.
